by Parker, Samuel

An ex-con reluctantly moves back to his small hometown and must fight against both the vigilante group that is threatening him and the dark and destructive force that lives inside him. Original.

Samuel Parker is the author of Purgatory Road. Born in the Michigan boondocks, he was raised on a never-ending road trip through the US. Besides writing, he is a process junkie and the ex-guitarist for several metal bands you've never heard of. He lives in West Michigan with his wife and twin sons.

When Michael was just 10 years old, he did something horrible, and the justice system decided that he was a monster. Now, as an adult, he's out of prison and back in his hometown, where any hopes of living an ordinary life are quickly erased. Under attack from townspeople who are determined to eradicate him once and for all, Michael lets loose the evil inside him. Suspenseful and very dark, this tautly plotted, tightly written thriller is designed to give the reader a serious case of the creeps, and, oh boy, does it succeed. Parker, who also wrote the excellent Purgatory Road (2017), has a real knack for creating fully realized characters and putting them into situations that force them to act in unexpected ways. A chilling thriller. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
