A martial arts enthusiast whose résumé includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least two hundred years ago, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher turned to writing as a career because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives mostly inside his own head so that he can write down the conversation of his imaginary friends, but his head can generally be found in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Jim is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera novels, and the Cinder Spires series, which began with The Aeronaut’s Windlass.

Whether you are a devoted fan of Chicago wizard Harry Dresden or a newcomer to the series, this short-story collection is worth reading. Longtime readers will have the opportunity to rekindle love for old favorites like Mab the Winter Queen, Bob, Harry's sometime-apprentice Molly Carpenter, and even Marcone's bodyguard Hendricks. For new readers, this book is an opportunity to get acquainted with the sense of humor and gritty voice that Butcher has developed over the series. Each story begins with a short foreword by the author to help the reader understand its place in the Dresden universe. Most of the stories revolve around Harry, extending his adventures and even broadening the universe he lives in. But a few standouts keep Harry in the background while Butcher focuses on Carpenter. "Bombshells" follows the events of Changes (2010) and shows Carpenter at a low point in her life. "Cold Case" showcases the interplay between Carpenter and Mab. These trips through the perspective of side characters will really appeal to readers who need a Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden fix and to all urban-fantasy readers.
